Antonin Rioche's last performance as a maker at Korzo

[Press release, 19-09-2024, The Hague] Antonin Rioche is leaving Korzo. The French choreographer, writer and filmmaker was a maker at Korzo for six years and is now making way for a new maker. But not before he bids farewell with a brand new work: We Are Doing Great.

Korzo's house of makers is always in motion and this year the carousel continues to spin. Antonin Rioche became in-house maker in 2018 and has made several well-received performances at Korzo in recent years, including The Others (2018), Glitter (2021 and reprise in 2024) and Ohgirl! (2022). Besides his work in and on stage, Antonin also made several (dance) films, including Ohboy! (2017), Finally a sign of life (2019) and The Research Project: The Leftovers (2022). Antonin will bid farewell to Korzo on Thursday 17 October with the premiere of his latest performance We Are Doing Great.

Anatomy of a separation

We Are Doing Great is about being on the edge of the abyss. Not a literal precipice, but the moment when two people decide to end their relationship. The end of most relationships always has a moment of delay, when two people hesitate to leave the room, knowing there is no turning back. What keeps us from walking away at those critical moments?

We Are Doing Great explores it all: the introspection, the constant asking ‘where did it go wrong?’. For the past few weeks, Antonin has been working mostly abroad on this performance, with residencies at CCN de Créteil et du Val-de-Marne I EMKA in France and Orsolina28 in Italy.

A challenge to seperate ways

‘I believe this work is beautiful and painful at the same time,’ Antonin says of We Are Doing Great. ‘It zooms in on a relationship break-up, how big of a challenge it is to leave someone you love very much. It's a duet, but also a trio involving the audience - come dance with us!’ Antonin dances this duet with Emilie Leriche, who previously created work for Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) during Up & Coming Choreographers in 2022.

We Are Doing Great is a one-off screening at Korzo on Thursday 17 October. At the Korzo Club that evening, we will screen some of the films Antonin made during his time as Korzo home maker. Antonin further plays We Are Doing Great at Theater Bellevue on Tuesday 22 October. He hopes to create more work with his company Funny People in the coming years.
